ABOUT THE ARTIST: Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist whose bold, graphic visual language emerged from New York’s street culture in the 1980s. Influenced early by Walt Disney and his cartoonist father, Haring studied at the School of Visual Arts after moving from Pennsylvania to New York, where he became immersed in graffiti and underground art scenes.
Working in white chalk on subway posters, he brought art directly into the public sphere—an ethos he expanded through murals, performances, and the Pop Shop, his storefront for accessible art. His circle included Warhol, Basquiat, and Scharf, and he collaborated with cultural icons such as Grace Jones.
Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring founded the Keith Haring Foundation to support education, prevention, and community outreach. He died in 1990 at age 31. His work, both celebratory and urgent, remains in major collections worldwide and in enduring public pieces like Crack is Wack (1986) in Manhattan.
